Affordable website design in Queenstown, Wānaka and Central Otago

The short answer: Queenstown has the widest website price range in the South Island, because it has two different markets. Published local pricing runs from $749 inc GST for a one-page build (Groundwork Digital) through $1,000 to $3,000 for a custom-coded small site (Rank Higher’s stated typical spend) to $9,000 to $16,000 ex GST for hand-coded builds (Pryce Digital). Tour and accommodation operators often need the top end. A tradie, cafe or salon in Cromwell, Alexandra or Wānaka needs the bottom end, done well: our LaunchPad plan is $1 a day, $365 + GST a year ($419.75 incl. GST), everything included, and more than 75 Central Otago businesses already have a site built and waiting.

Rank Higher (Wānaka, Queenstown), typical custom-coded site$1,000–$3,000, plus a domain around $25 and hosting often under $10 a month
National one-page range (Kiwi Web Design calculator)$800–$2,000 ex GST
Pryce Digital (Queenstown), Foundation tier$9,000–$16,000 ex GST, 5–7 weeks

Every figure was checked on the provider’s own page on the day of publication; sources are at the bottom. The five-figure end is not a rip-off. A lodge with a booking engine, a heli-ski operator with eight languages of content, a tour company with live availability: those sites earn their price. The mistake is buying that build, or a cut-down imitation of it, when you’re a mechanic in Cromwell whose customers want a phone number and Saturday hours.

What affordable should include, whoever builds it

  1. A .co.nz in your name. Businesses change hands often in resort towns, and a domain in an ex-designer’s name is the expensive surprise at sale time.
  2. Seasonal hours you can actually change. Google’s local guidance lists accurate hours, including special hours, among the things that affect visibility. If changing them costs $100 an hour, they won’t get changed.
  3. A page that loads on roaming data. Visitors are on foreign SIMs and hostel wifi. Plain, light pages win.
  4. Facts in text. “Open 7 days, 8am to 4pm, closed 10 to 24 June” in words, not in a photo of a chalkboard, because 45% of consumers now ask AI tools for local recommendations and the assistants read text.

What’s already built across Central Otago

We build ahead. From each business’s public details (name, town, what it does, its public Google rating) we’ve built one-page sites for real Central Otago businesses and put them live as previews, checked by a person, so an owner can see the finished thing before deciding anything. At the time of writing:

Across the group that’s 25 trade and auto, 25 hospitality, 22 personal-care and 6 retail businesses. Previews carry a noindex tag on purpose so nothing competes with an owner’s real site; when one is claimed it goes live on the owner’s own .co.nz. If one of these is yours and you’d like it changed or taken down, tell us and we will.

The season is the whole design brief

Most website advice assumes a business whose facts stay still. Central Otago businesses have facts that move: hours by season, a closure for the shoulder weeks, a winter menu, a summer crew. That changes what “affordable” means. A $749 build with $100-an-hour edits costs more over a year than the number suggests; a plan with edits included costs exactly what it says. Ours includes five a year, by email, which is what a seasonal one-page business typically needs. The full, honest list of what’s included is here.

The other seasonal fact is the customer. A large share of the people searching “mechanic Wānaka” or “massage Queenstown open now” have never been here before and will never come back; they’re deciding entirely on what the page and the reviews say, in the thirty seconds they give it. Reviews carry that load, and so does a first line that states the trade, the town and today’s hours.

Where we fit

We’re GoDigital, an Auckland-based, NZ-owned team; the Central Otago work is remote, like most web work now, and it costs the same in Clyde as in Coatesville. LaunchPad is our launch offer: a professional one-page site built free during launch, then $1 a day covering the .co.nz domain (registered to you), hosting, SSL and security, Google + AI-search setup and five updates a year. No lock-in, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and it renews at the same price.

Where we’re not the answer: booking engines, multilingual sites, online stores. Those are the five-figure jobs above, done properly by Queenstown’s specialists and by GoDigital for businesses that outgrow one page.

Search your business name and see whether yours is already built.

Common questions

How much does a website cost in Queenstown?

Published Queenstown and Wānaka pricing spans a wide range: $749 inc GST for a one-page build (Groundwork Digital), $1,000 to $3,000 for a custom-coded small site (Rank Higher's stated typical spend), and $9,000 to $16,000 ex GST for hand-coded builds at Pryce Digital. Our LaunchPad plan is $1 a day, $365 + GST a year ($419.75 incl. GST), everything included.

Why is the Queenstown range so wide?

Because the town has two different markets. Accommodation, tours and activity operators need booking engines, multiple languages and a lot of pages, and that's a five-figure job done properly. A tradie in Cromwell, a barber in Wānaka or a cafe in Alexandra needs one fast page with hours, prices and a phone number. Buy the one you are.

My hours change every season. Is that a problem?

It's the main thing to plan for. Winter hours, summer hours, the fortnight you close in June: each is a one-line text change on the page and on your Google Business Profile. Our plan includes five updates a year by email, which usually covers a seasonal business. Plans that meter edits by the quarter-hour get expensive here.

Do you build for Cromwell, Alexandra and Wānaka too?

Yes. At the time of writing, more than 75 businesses across Queenstown, Wānaka, Cromwell, Alexandra, Clyde, Arrowtown and Lake Hāwea have a one-page site already built from their public details and waiting to be claimed. Search your business name on the home page to see whether yours is one of them.

Can I see my site before I pay?

Yes. If we've built it, it appears in seconds when you search your business name on the onedollar.co.nz home page, and you can read every word first. Nothing is charged until you claim it, and there's a 30-day money-back guarantee after that.

Are the preview sites visible on Google?

No, on purpose. Previews carry a noindex tag so a draft never competes with or leaks ahead of your real site. When you claim yours it goes live on a .co.nz registered in your name, built to be found.
