How much does a website cost in NZ? 2026 prices, compared

The short answer: a basic small-business website in New Zealand costs roughly $650–$4,000 upfront from an agency, $1,500–$4,000 from a freelancer, $25–$55 a month if you build it yourself, or $95–$299 a month from a pay-monthly service. Add a domain ($25–$50 a year) and hosting ($9–$28 a month) if they’re not bundled.

One thing before the numbers: we sell one of the options below — the $1-a-day one. The figures are real either way. Every range here comes from published NZ pricing, and the sources are linked at the bottom so you can check them yourself.

What do NZ web agencies charge?

For a simple local-business site, published NZ agency pricing runs from about $650 for a one-pager to $1,200–$4,000 for a small multi-page site. Mid-tier business sites land between $5,000 and $15,000, and custom or e-commerce work starts around $10,000 and climbs from there.

The build price is only half the story. Most agencies also offer (or expect) a care plan — hosting, backups, updates and small changes — at roughly $50–$200 a month for a small site. Over three years, a “$3,000 website” with a modest care plan is a $5,000–$10,000 commitment.

An agency is the right call when you need e-commerce, custom features, or serious brand work. It’s an expensive way to buy a five-page brochure.

What do freelancers charge?

Typical NZ freelancer builds run $1,500–$4,000, with template-based work from around $600–$1,000 and fixed packages advertised from $299 + GST. Rates are lower than agencies, and good freelancers do excellent work.

The catch is rarely the build — it’s everything after. Hosting, renewals, security updates and content changes need an ongoing arrangement, and freelancers move, get busy or change careers. Ask who looks after the site in year two before you sign off on the build.

What do DIY website builders really cost?

Mainstream builders charge about $25–$55 a month on business-grade plans. Squarespace bills in NZ dollars; most others bill in US dollars, and GST applies to overseas digital services, so the advertised price understates what lands on your card.

The bigger cost is time. You’re the designer, the copywriter, the photo editor and the person who sets up Google — and the person who fixes it at 9pm. The tools are genuinely good these days; the question is whether your evenings are the right budget to spend. Our DIY vs done-for-you guide runs that maths honestly.

What do pay-monthly website services cost?

New Zealand’s pay-monthly (build-included) market sits between $95 and $299 a month, with a floor around $99 and most established players at $199–$250 a month. No big upfront bill, and hosting and upkeep are included — it’s a sensible model.

Read the inclusions closely, though. Edits are usually metered (15 minutes a month, one change a month, or a couple of hours before overage rates apply), some plans have 12–24 month minimum terms, and SEO is commonly a paid add-on — at some providers it’s another $299 a month.

The component costs everyone pays

Whoever builds your site, these parts exist underneath, so bundled prices are easier to judge when you know them:

  • .co.nz domain: about $25–$50 a year
  • Shared hosting: about $9–$28 a month for a small business site
  • SSL certificate: should be free — walk away from anyone charging for it
  • Business email: roughly $10 a month per mailbox (Google Workspace or Microsoft 365)

Where the $1-a-day model fits

Our LaunchPad plan is $1 a day — $365 + GST a year ($419.75 incl. GST), billed annually. The build is free during launch, and the price includes a professionally designed one-page site, a .co.nz domain registered in your name, hosting, SSL, Google and AI-search setup, and five updates a year. No lock-in, and it renews at the same price.

Why so cheap? Word of mouth is our whole marketing budget — every live site sells the next one — and modern hosting costs very little when sites are built properly. It’s a one-page site by design: the right size for a local business that needs to be found, trusted and contacted. If you need bookings, a store or many pages, that’s a bigger build (our parent team at GoDigital does those too).

How to choose

  • No time, tight budget, just need to be findable: pay-monthly service or LaunchPad. Compare what’s actually included.
  • Have time, enjoy tinkering, want total control: DIY builder. Budget real hours, not hopeful ones.
  • Need e-commerce, bookings or custom features: agency or established freelancer. Get two quotes and ask about year-two costs.
  • Not sure a website will pay for itself at all: read do I need a website for my small business? first — the research might surprise you.

Common questions

What is the cheapest way to get a website in New Zealand?

Building it yourself on a website builder is the cheapest in cash — roughly $25 to $55 a month plus about $25 to $50 a year for a domain — but it costs the most in your time. The cheapest done-for-you option in NZ that we know of is our own LaunchPad plan at $1 a day, $365 + GST a year, with the build, domain, hosting and updates included.

How much does an e-commerce website cost in NZ?

Considerably more than a brochure site. NZ agency pricing for custom or e-commerce builds typically starts around $10,000 and can pass $50,000 for complex stores. A DIY store on a platform like Shopify costs less cash but adds monthly platform fees, transaction costs and a lot of setup work.

Is it better to pay monthly or one-off for a website?

Pay-monthly suits owners who want no big upfront bill and someone else handling hosting and upkeep; one-off suits businesses that want to own a custom build outright and have $3,000 or more to spend. Compare total cost over three years, check what edits are included, and check whether SEO costs extra.

Are NZ website prices quoted with or without GST?

Usually without. Most NZ business pricing is quoted plus GST, so add 15% to compare fairly. Watch overseas tools too: they bill in US dollars and GST is added to overseas digital services, so a US$29 plan costs more in NZD than it first looks.

What ongoing costs should I budget for a website?

A .co.nz domain is about $25 to $50 a year, shared hosting $9 to $28 a month, and a business email box around $10 a month. SSL should be free. If someone maintains the site for you, care plans run roughly $50 to $200 a month. Bundled plans roll all of this into one price.

Why is onedollar.co.nz only $1 a day?

Word of mouth is our whole marketing budget. We want the biggest portfolio of small-business websites in New Zealand, and every live site sells the next one. Efficient hosting keeps our costs low, so $1 a day — $365 + GST a year, $419.75 including GST — covers it. No setup fee, and it renews at the same price.
